My brother
was in town and we were looking for a place to have lunch. I had always meant to try this place and
their menu said they had “Tavern Crust” pizza.
Now I was raised with Midwestern tavern style pizza and it is still my
favorite style, so I suggested we try it out.
In
addition to the tavern crust, they also serve Chicago pan pizzas. Both styles come in five different sizes,
ranging from small to family sized. In
addition, there are many other selections to choose from if you’re not in the
mood for pizza.I opted for a small 9” tavern crust pizza with pepperoni and green pepper. The menu warns that lots of cheese is used, so don’t order extra cheese (although you can, if you really want to). My brother also ordered the same size with different toppings.
What came out were good pizzas, but there was too much for us to eat by ourselves. Both my brother and I only ate half our pizza and took home the rest.
It was good pizza and I would recommend it to others, but it was NOT what I was expecting for a tavern style pizza.
What I liked
1. The crust was browned really well and had a
nice crunch to it. It held up well and I
was able to pick up each piece with ease, without it collapsing.2. The sauce had a nice tomato flavor and wasn’t too sweet or heavily spiced
3. There was a nice selection of toppings, although one that was noticeably missing was ground beef. They did have a meatball choice, but that’s just not the same.
What I didn’t like
1. This was not what I
consider a tavern style pizza. Just
because you cut a pizza into little squares does not make it tavern style. A good Midwestern tavern style pizza has a really
thin, almost cracker-like crust.2. Although there was plenty of cheese, it was not well distributed across the pie. The cheese was thicker in the middle and some of the edge pieces only had just a little bit.
3. Maybe I’m getting old, but the pepperoni seemed a little too spicy to me. It spoke to me later in the day.
